South Sudanese Refugees Association (SSURA) is a legally registered community-based organization of refugees, which is based in West Nile, Uganda. SSURA, which was established in September 2016 at Koboko, was established with an aim of fostering reconciliation, social cohesion, and peaceful coexistence between refugees and the host communities.
As of Arua, Koboko, and Yumbe, SSURA works on psychosocial welfare, economic empowerment, and resilience in communities and works towards the self-reliance of refugees in settlements and towns and members of the host community. Besides delivery of services, SSURA also plays a very important role as a coordinating and supporting place for refugees who arrive in the West Nile urban centers, which is commonly an entry point of new refugees seeking information and referrals, as well as community services.
SSURA is also a community-level data collection and information
coordinating center, aiding the process of refugee profiling, needs
identification, and evidence-based programming in urban refugee settings. This was evident during a survey conducted by VNG International to ascertain the
number of refugees and their social status in Koboko and Arua urban areas,
through its community networks and collaborations with local government and
humanitarian actors. The organization also undertakes advocacy and raises awareness on the protection of refugees, inclusion, and legal rights towards
enhancing community integration and service access.
"Beyond direct service delivery, SSURA has established itself
as a refugee-led research, monitoring, evaluation, and learning organization,
implementing assessments, evaluations, gender analyses, market studies, labour
market research, migration and reintegration studies, and policy-focused
research in partnership with international organizations, governments, UN
agencies, academic institutions, and consulting firms."
SSURA combines quantitative and qualitative methodologies, digital data collection systems, participatory approaches, and community-led research to ensure that the voices of refugees, host communities, women, youth, and marginalized populations inform decision-making and programme development.
